We talked with Lindy-Lou Bailey, Marketing Manager at Zip Zap Circus all about the background of the show as well as more about Cape Town and the culture.
Q. Can you tell us more about Cape Town?
Cape Town, located on the southwestern coast of South Africa, is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, vibrant cultural scene, and historical significance. Dominated by the iconic Table Mountain, the city offers breathtaking landscapes, from pristine beaches to lush vineyards. Cape Town is a melting pot of diverse cultures, reflected in its eclectic architecture, rich culinary offerings, and dynamic arts and music scenes. It also holds historical importance, with sites such as Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, serving as poignant reminders of the country’s journey towards democracy.
Q. Could you explain some of the terminology in the show? What is a township? What does that mean in terms of South African culture? Any other words/phrases unique to Cape Town or South Africa that are mentioned in the show?
As a nation, South Africans are resilient. Our national motto – Unity In Diversity – reflects the country’s diverse cultures and the aspiration for unity amongst its people.
Ubuntu – I am because we are.
Township – established during the apartheid era as part of a policy to segregate communities based on race. They are typically densely populated, with informal settlements and limited access to basic services. Residents often face high unemployment, poverty, and challenging living conditions, but there is a strong sense of community and resilience among the people.
Q. What is a Gum Boot Dance?
A gum boot dance is a dance that was curated in the gold mines of South Africa by the miners, as a form of celebration. It’s a very South African traditional form of dancing. In the US Gum boots are rain boots.
Q. Could you tell us more about the creation and background of the school?
Zip Zap Circus School was founded in Cape Town in 1992 to inspire and empower young people and help build a new culture of peaceful co-existence in South Africa. Working with a community of children from diverse backgrounds, Zip Zap creates environments for kids to ‘dare to dream’ and learn to make those dreams a reality.
