How to Make Juggling Balls

Put your circus skills to the test with your very own juggling balls!

DIY Juggling Balls

What you’ll need:

  • Balloons
  • Funnel
  • Rice
  • Scissors

Directions:

  1. Blow up a balloon and keep it inflated for 30 seconds to stretch it out. Deflate it, then use the funnel to pour in the rice so the balloon is firm but squeezable.
  2. Snip off the raised ring at the end of the balloon. Now cut off the neck of a second balloon and stretch it over the hole in the full balloon to seal the rice into your juggling ball.
  3. Cut the neck off a third balloon, and stretch it over the other two, so your rice doesn’t escape. You can add more balloons for patterns and colors and can even cut holes in a balloon to make a spotty pattern. Make two more similar-sized balls and then get juggling!

malva-pudding-recipe

Prep Time: 30 minutes  | Cook Time: 45 minutes | Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Ingredients

Pudding

  • 1 tbsp butter (room temperature)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 4 tbsp apricot jam
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp vinegar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt

 Sauce

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp water

Instructions

Pudding

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, sugar, jam, and egg until light and fluffy.
  3. Lightly whisk the milk, vinegar, and vanilla extract in a large measuring cup or a small bowl.
  4. In another measuring cup or bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Alternating between the milk mixture and the flour, gradually mix in to the large mixing bowl with the butter, sugar, jam, and egg mixture.
  6. Pour into a lightly greased oven-proof glass or porcelain dish (8×8” works well).
  7. Bake for 45 minutes, or until a knife comes out with spongy crumbs stuck to it rather than uncooked batter.

Sauce

  1. Add all sauce ingredients together in a pot and bring to a boil.
  2. Let it simmer, stirring constantly, for 3 minutes.
  3. Stab the pudding a few times with a fork to help the sauce sink into the middle. Slowly pour the sauce over the pudding.

Serve the pudding warm with ice cream on the side, if you’d like. Enjoy!

Mbube, Mbube–A Traditional South African Game

Play this fun South African children’s game with your friends!

LionImpala

Mbube, pronounced “mboo-bay”, is the Zulu word for lion. The goal of the game is to help the blindfolded ‘lion’ or ‘mbube’ locate and capture an ‘impala’ (a medium-sized antelope found in South Africa).

Instructions

  1. Players form a large circle.
  2. The leader selects two people to be the lion and the impala. These players are blindfolded and spun around.
  3. Staying in the circle, the lion moves around hunting for the impala. The impala can move and try to avoid capture by the lion.
  4. The players on the outside of the circle chant, “mbube, mbube.” As the lion gets closer to the impala, the chanting gets louder and faster. If the lion moves further away from the impala, the chanting gets quieter and slower.
  5. If the impala is caught, then the leader selects a new player to be the impala.
