I first experienced Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! at the Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) last year and was absolutely enchanted. Seeing it again this year, I was delighted to find it just as magical – if not better. Directed by Dean Holt, this year’s performance offered fresh surprises and reinforced why this production remains a cherished holiday tradition.

One of the joys of revisiting this show is discovering new details that might have gone unnoticed before. From the intricate set designs to the whimsical costumes, the world of Whoville came alive in dazzling ways. CTC’s creative team, led by scenic designer Tom Butsch and costume designer David Kay Mickelsen, delivered a visual feast that enchanted audiences of all ages.

Adding to the immersive experience were the interactive pre-show activities. My 3-year-old nephew and I especially enjoyed the winter-themed photo booth, where we created festive boomerangs and GIFs. This playful addition allowed families to capture the holiday magic in a fun and memorable way, setting the perfect tone for the enchanting evening ahead.

Reed Sigmund, reprising his role as The Grinch for the seventh time, delivered a delightful balance of mischief and heart. His comedic timing and physical humor had the audience laughing throughout, even easing the nerves of my nephew, who appeared a little frightened at first. The humor lightened the more intense moments, keeping younger viewers entertained and engaged.

The dual role of Cindy-Lou Who, performed by Batya Rose Green Hofkin and Chloe Hu, brought innocence and charm to the stage. Their heartfelt performances and sweet renditions of classic tunes beautifully complemented Mel Marvin’s lively score. Dean Holt’s portrayal of Old Max added warmth and nostalgia, grounding the whimsical tale with his reflective storytelling.

What truly makes this production stand out is CTC’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. With ASL-interpreted and sensory-friendly performances, as well as audio descriptions, CTC ensures everyone can join the holiday celebration. This dedication to creating a welcoming environment is evident both on and off the stage.

In sum, CTC’s “Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” remains a heartwarming holiday tradition. Whether it’s your first time or a cherished repeat visit, this production offers something new for everyone.
