Extend your experience with these fun activities inspired by The Wizard of Oz!
Activity—Wicked Witch Slime
Let’s make slime as bright green as the Wicked Witch of the West!
Materials
- 4 oz of White Glue (we recommend Elmer’s glue)
- ½ tsp baking soda
- 2-3 tbsp of contact solution
- 2 drops of green gel food coloring
Utensils
- Silicone spatula
- Note: It is important to use silicone to prevent sticking!
- Medium mixing bowl
Instructions
- Pour the glue into your mixing bowl.
- Add 2 drops of green gel food coloring into the glue. Mix the color into the glue with a silicone spatula.
- Add baking soda and mix until there are no lumps in the slime mixture.
- Finally, add contact solution and mix well. Start with just 2 tbsps and, when the slime mixture is holding together really well, you can use your hands to mix it.
Recipe—Munchkin Muffins
Let’s make some bite-sized muffins, perfect to share with the residents of Munchkinland… Or your friends and family, if they’re lucky!
Safety Note: This activity is meant to be done WITH adult supervision. Make sure to let everything cool before touching it with bare hands. Adults should use oven-safe gloves to handle the muffin tin as it goes in and out of the oven.
Ingredients
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour (you can substitute a 1:1 gluten free flour)
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ vegetable oil (you can substitute Greek yogurt)
- 1 cup milk (you can substitute a dairy-free milk)
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup of your favorite mix-in:
- Choose from chocolate chips, blueberries, chopped strawberries (let them sit in a few paper towels to get out some moisture first), or your choice of chopped nuts.
- Note: If you want to mix a few of those mix-ins together, make sure that the total amount of mix-ins is 1 cup or less.
Utensils
- Muffin tin with small muffin cups
- Muffin liners OR non-stick cooking spray
- Large bowl
- Medium bowl
- Whisk
- Spatula
- Spoon or ice cream scoop
- Toothpick (to test for doneness of the muffins)
- Oven-gloves to handle food going in and out of the oven
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Either line each well of the muffin tin with muffin liners or spray with a non-stick cooking spray.
- Use a whisk to mix all dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt) together in a large bowl.
- In the medium bowl, whisk together all wet ingredients (oil. Milk, egg, and vanilla extract).
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir with the spatula until well combined.
- Time for the mix-ins! Add ½ cup of your favorite mix-in (or up to 1 cup of multiple mix-ins).
- Using a spoon or an ice cream scoop, scoop the batter into the muffin tin so that each well has the same amount of batter. Don’t fill it more than ¾ of the way full.
- Bake muffins for 12-15 minutes. You can check to see if it is fully cooked by putting a toothpick into the center of the muffin. If it comes out clean, the muffin is done.
- Note: If you are using a regular sized muffin tin for this recipe, bake the muffins for 18-20 minutes.
- Let the muffins cool in the tin for at least 15 minutes.
- Take the muffins out of the tin. You can enjoy them fresh or store them in an airtight container for 3-5 days.
Game—Oz Tag
Let’s play tag, but with a twist: You can only move like characters from The Wizard of Oz if you get tagged! Make sure to play this game in a large, open space (ideally outside) where you are able to run around and move freely.
How to Play
- There must be 4 or more people to play the game. There will be a tagger, a healer, and as many players as you want.
- The Tagger (Dorothy) must move by skipping, as if they were on the yellow brick road.
- The Healer (Glinda) must move by spinning (not too fast, you don’t want to get dizzy!) as if they are in a bubble.
- All players may start by moving normally to avoid the tagger. The only person the tagger cannot tag is the healer. When a player is tagged, the tagger will call out a character from The Wizard of Oz and the person who was tagged must only move like that character. The tagger may not call out the same character twice in a row.
- Cowardly Lion: Move on the ground using arms and legs.
- Tin Man: Move as if your knees and elbows are stiff.
- Scarecrow: Move with your arms out to the side in a T shape, like a scarecrow in a field.
- Wicked Witch: Move as if you are riding on a broomstick.
- The healer’s job is to go from person to person and turn them back to normal so that they can move any way they want to. To heal someone, they must tap them on the head or shoulder.
