Assistant Director Positions

Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) is seeking qualified candidates for Assistant Director positions for different productions for our ’24-’25 season.  These are temporary positions working on one of three productions:

  • Drawing Lessons (work from September 3, 2024 to October 17, 2024)
  • Milo Imagines the World (work from December 27, 2024 to February 13, 2025)
  • Frozen (March 6, 2025 to April 24, 2025)

The Assistant Director experience at CTC is designed to expose undergraduate, graduate and early career directors to an internal view of the rehearsal process of a professional regional theatre that works with youth.  This position requires someone who has demonstrated knowledge and skill in directing for the stage, who enjoys working with youth, who has the ability to build positive working relationships with children from age 10 to 18, and who can positively contribute to an anti-racist/anti-bias organization.  Applicants for this role should have strong organization skills, sound judgement, patience and the ability to work collaboratively.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director begins their process by meeting with the director and attending initial design/process meetings as available.  They attend all rehearsals, production meetings and technical rehearsals through opening night.  They also work with the stage manager to facilitate understudy rehearsals the week after opening.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supporting the Production

  • Attend rehearsals and production meetings
  • Take notes for the director during meetings and organizing them a coherent manner
  • Participate in running scenes with actors, giving notes as needed
  • Communicate with the Stage Manager and/or the design team regarding production
  • Facilitate student-lead research projects
  • Coach student actors
  • Work with Stage Manager to facilitate understudy rehearsals after opening

  • Encourage and empower everyone to speak out against racist and/or biased workplace practices and policies

COMPENSATION

The pay for these temporary positions is $684.00 per week.  Benefits include sick and safe leave and the ability to contribute to a 403(b)-retirement savings plan.

Generation Now Administrative Fellowship

The Generation Now cohort of theatres, Penumbra Theatre, Ma-Yi Theatre, Latino Theater Company, Native Voices at the Autry and Children’s Theatre Company are proud to announce the Generation Now Administrative Fellowship opportunity.  This is a 12-month fellowship starting in July 2024 and working through the 2024-2025 season.  The purpose of this fellowship is to support the Generation Now collaborative partnership between the five professional theatres. The goal of this partnership is to co-commission and co-develop sixteen new plays by BIPOC artists for multigenerational audiences over five years.  The administrative fellow will have access to a physical work station at CTC in Minneapolis, as well as CTC’s staff and infrastructure and will report to CTC’s Artistic Director.  This position will consult with and report out to the Artistic Directors of all five theatres in the Generation Now cohort.

Carpenter/Draftsperson

Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) is seeking qualified candidates with a background theatrical construction drafting techniques and regional theatre or commercial scenery production for the position of Carpenter/Draftsperson.  This is a seasonal benefits eligible position that is guaranteed at least 40 weeks of full-time work each season and is part of a collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 13, AFL-CIO.  Per that collective bargaining agreement, in the event that two or more applicants rank equally in hiring criteria, preference of employment will be granted to those who are currently employed by CTC.  This position requires someone who is knowledgeable about basic scenic carpentry, welding, rigging, theatrical automation and construction drafting and also have the ability to positively contribute to an anti-racist/anti-bias organization.  Applicants for this role should have creative problem-solving skills, analytical abilities, and strong interpersonal skills.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position builds and installs scenic elements based on designs and concepts the scenic designer supplies through models and drawings.  They also draft construction drawings to be used by the carpenters to build and install scenic elements.  This position spends some time working on the computer in the Tech Office, and some time working down in the theaters and on the shop floor.

This position reports to the Technical Director and works closely alongside the Assistant Technical Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Drafting and Carpentry

  • Drafting: Working Knowledge of AutoCAD (3D Modeling), 3D Printers, CNC Routers
  • Automation:   Drafting plans for incorporating automation into scenic units, as well as occasional installation and troubleshooting
  • Carpentry: Framing, finishing and detail work
  • Welding: MIG process, Gas cutting and brazing
  • Sculpting: Foam and woodcarving, texture work
  • Stitching: Drops, layout, cutting and sewing of fabric
  • Rigging: Cable Make-up, maintenance, hanging of scenery, special projects
  • Load-in: Installation of scenery, and storage
  • Electrical/mechanical: Build and/or repair of general theatre equipment
  • Other: Duties as assigned

Experience

  • Demonstrated ability to assist Technical Director in the production of technical drawings
  • Demonstrated skill in construction using wood materials, steel products, foams, fiberglass, electricity, fabrics, paints and chemical solvents.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of 3D modeling in AutoCAD
  • Working knowledge of 3D printers and CNC routers.
  • Working knowledge of scenic automation technology (Creative Conners).
  • Working knowledge of radial arm saws, table saws, band saws, cold saws, drill presses, miter boxes, wood lathes, routers, sanders, MIG welding equipment, sewing machines, electrical and pneumatic power hand tools.
  • Knowledge of safety best practices, fall protection; OSHA 10 or 30 preferred

Senior Audience Experience Manager

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Audience Experience Manager is a hands-on leader of the Audience Experience teams, advocating for exceptional audience experiences that help to ensure strong short- and long-term business and audience engagement outcomes at Children’s Theatre Company. In addition to overseeing the front-of-house and ticket office operations, this role works with internal partners to develop a comprehensive understanding of the patron experience using supporting data and audience insights to guide strategy and influence decision-making throughout the theatre. This position ensures that the front-of-house and ticket office operations enhance overall audience satisfaction, sustain a standard of service excellence, and deliver on business objectives including earned revenue generation through ticket sales and concessions and merchandise sales.

This position reports to the Director of Marketing and Communications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Audience Services

  • Build, lead, and support a diverse team of front facing staff in delivering industry leading customer service to a multigenerational and multicultural audience
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, belonging, and creative problem-solving
  • Lead, plan, and administer the Audience Experience department in a manner that delivers upon industry leading customer service and audience engagement levels, and meets financial goals
  • Recruit, train, and supervise managers of front-of-house and ticket office teams to ensure a consistently excellent audience experience is achieved and that business goals and service standards are met, and departmental protocols are understood and executed
  • Stay aware of best practices in the service and hospitality field and advocate for the audience experience, ensuring that needs and interests are considered in both daily operations and institutional projects
  • Log, measure, and respond to patron concerns and issues with care ensuring a positive outcome for all involved parties; elevate concerns to senior management as needed
  • Consistently monitor and improve customer service policies to ensure that patrons feel their evolving needs are being handled in the most effective manner possible
  • Partner with the Director of Marketing and Communications to ensure alignment with departmental goals, initiatives, sales incentives, and key messages for audiences; provide clarity, communication, and consistency of messaging across all departments
  • Participate in regular Marketing and Communications Department meetings, cross-departmental meetings, and other workgroup and taskforces
  • Manage elevated visitor-facing issues and staff performance promptly and appropriately
  • Manage annual department budgets, partnering with Director of Marketing and Communications, Director of Finance, and the Chief Operating Officer to ensure alignment and proper administration
  • Act as lead manager for and representative of all Audience Experience efforts to ensure the success of internal collaboration and consistency of service provided
  • Ensure appropriate protocols for cash handling and reconciliation in concession and merchandise sales and ticket office
  • Distribute timely communication of institutional information to all full-time and part-time Audience Experience staff
  • Produce all required reporting for the department
  • Collaborate with the Safety and Security Supervisor on evacuation plans and procedures, safety concerns, building concerns, and ensure all front of house staff receive AED/First Aid/CPR training
  • Ensure State of Minnesota laws are followed concerning the sale of alcohol including overseeing training adherence and licenses are current
  • Work closely with the Tessitura Administrator to support smooth CRM operations and interdepartmental communication of customer service issues
  • Build framework to collect and utilize departmental data to ensure success in institutional strategic goals
  • Establish consistent front of house and ticket office KPIs, ensure consistent staff training, and establish and maintain performance management structures
  • Develop and implement departmental initiatives and strategies to support the mission of the Children’s Theatre Company
  • Oversee merchandise and concessions operations to ensure budget targets are met, revenue is maximized, and patron’s needs are addressed, including sourcing, pricing, inventory, point of sale technologies, signage, analysis, and reporting
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Supervision

  • Recruit, train, and manage department staff or oversee the training of staff by the House Manager and the Ticket Office Manager
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and refinement of a training program for front-line staff focused on techniques for working with audiences of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds
  • Supervise Ticket Office Manager and House Manager ensuring consistent and decisive administration of ticketing and service delivery
  • Prioritize mentorship by developing ongoing professional development opportunities for staff

 

Collaborate with all departments in the furtherance of CTC’s goal of being an anti-racist/anti-bias theatre that works towards Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

  • Assist with monitoring and ensuring access, representation, participation, and decision making for historically marginalized communities in the Ticket Office and Front of House, for our patrons, and in all aspects of CTC’s audience services

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Experience

  • Significant customer service experience, preferably in a theatre, museum or in other entertainment industry organizations
  • Considerable demonstrated skills in managing dynamic teams
  • Demonstrated supervisory and team-building skills
  • Inspirational leadership style combining organizational competence, excellent interpersonal skills, and clear communication across all channels
  • Adept at managing high volume staffing models
  • Comfort managing complex interpersonal relationships, diplomatically addressing difficult service scenarios
  • Experience working in a union environment strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated success working effectively with diverse teams and audiences
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge in budget management, cash handling, reporting, and budgeting experience is essential

Ticketing Associate

Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Ticketing Associate. This is a part-time 15 to 25-hour per week position with hours available Tuesday – Friday, 10am to 5pm, as well as weeknight and weekend daytime hours subject to our performance schedule. This position requires someone who is detail-oriented, collaborative and customer focused, and who can positively contribute to an anti-racist/anti-bias organization. POSITION SUMMARY:   

During Tues – Fri business hours, Associates process single ticket, subscription, and Theatre Arts Training class orders and exchanges over the telephone, through the mail, and at the ticket office. During performances, Associates process will-call pick-up, ticket reprints, rush sales, and any other night-of ticketing requests. This is a great fit for someone who enjoys a high-activity atmosphere, making conversation, solving problems for others and who can retain a lot of information about a large product catalog. 

This position reports to the Ticket Operations Manager.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

Business Hour Duties 

  • Answer ticket office phone lines and help patrons. 
  • Process single ticket, season ticket, student matinee payments, and Theatre Arts Training orders by phone, mail or in person. 
  • Provide support for exchanges and other issues related to existing orders.  
  • Occasional outbound calling to subscribers. 

 

Performance Duties  

  • Process in-person rush sales, ticket reprints, will-call pick-ups, and any other patron ticketing requests as time allows during pre-show.  
  • Accurately handle cash, check, and credit card payments. 
  • Assist patrons with wayfinding, access service requests, and general CTC queries.  
  • Occasionally answer phone calls from our Performance Hotline.  

 

Other Duties 

  • Maintain working knowledge of and provide information on all performances, classes, camps, and subscriptions.  
  • Complete necessary daily data entry and projects as assigned.

Carpenter/Welder – work in the scene shop. Position duties can include but are not limited to carpentry, welding, rigging, load in and strike.  $22.00/hr

Scenic Artist – assist in producing the paint and texture finishes for all scenic elements. Requires excellent drawing and copying skills and the ability to read blueprints and understand scale. $18.00 – $22.00/hr

Electrician – hang, focus and strike lighting equipment. $21.05/hr

Wardrobe Swing – learn dresser tracks and laundry procedures. Cover for wardrobe staff absences and assist with laundry and reset on Saturdays and Sundays during show run. $21.05/hr

Wig Maintenance – maintain wigs during run of a show, approx. 2 hours per day. $21.05/hr

POSITION SUMMARY

The Front of House Associates provide excellent customer service and assist the rest of Front of House staff in ensuring that productions and events are safe, entertaining, and efficiently run.  Front of House Associates duties include scanning tickets, assisting patrons with seating and wayfinding and running concessions.

This position reports to the Patron Experience Manager.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Patron Services

  • Assist in making sure the lobby, theatre, and concession stand are set up before patrons arrive
  • Provide friendly and engaging service to patrons as they arrive, tear/scan tickets, help patrons find their seats, direct them to restrooms, answer questions about the theatre and shows, help with late seating, and watch the house for any general issues that arise before and during the performance
  • Work assigned concessions lanes and gift shop prior to the show, during intermission and post show in a quick and efficient manner while making accurate transactions using the Square sales system
  • Assist in making sure that the patrons all leave the theatre safely post performance
  • Help clean the theatre and restock concessions and gift shop for the next performance
  • Represent Children’s Theatre Company at both internal and external events as requested
  • Attend trainings and meetings as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Patron Experience Manager and/or Performance Supervisor
  • Project the brand image of CTC through actions and behaviors at events and at the theatre
  • Help create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, engaging with patrons and establishing CTC spaces as safe and accommodating for all
